TWI for the Children Camps and Leadership Training in the Balkans
            2010

The Camp4Kids Programs in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo and Montenegro:

This month-long program  presented camp programs that teach team work and leadership skills done through fun-filled activities. Activities included Storytelling, Arts and Crafts, Sports and Games, Musical Activities. Over the camp period we worked with approximately 1,000 children in schools and orphanages.

The story for 2010 was "The Little Red" and the lessons to be learned through the story is: "You have to build a team and you have to clearly explain the goal of the program to your team members; you cannot assume you have a team - you have to build a team; team members must be selected with care so that all members have the same values and enthusiasm for the program/project; understand the goal and are eager to work with the other team members to achieve the goal that, you the leader has.

 Leadership Training Workshop:

The Leadership Camp was part of the Camp to Kids Program at the orphanage in Bijela, Montenegro. The participants were the TWI Leadership Team Interpreters who worked with the Camp4Kids programs in the Balkans. The team members are university students,  newly graduated students and students working on  advanced degrees. They have worked with the TWI Camps in their own countries prior to the coming to the Leadership Camp. They came from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro and worked  with the TWI team members from the United States - making five countries taking part in the program. The country teams were accompanied by their Country Coordinator, who works with TWI to organize the camp program in their country. TWI brought two leaders from the United States to lead  discussions.

The purpose of the Leadership Camp Workshop is to give all of the TWI teams an opportunity to get to know each other, to work together at the camp for the children in the orphanage, and to participate in the Leadership  Workshop where topics pertaining to  personal and professional development are discussed.

The Theme of the 2010 Leadership Workshop was "Finding Your Strengths and Learning How to Use this Information". The topics were based on the book Strength Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath. A quote in the book says, "Every human being has talents that are just waiting to be uncovered - too many people spend a lifetime headed in the wrong direction...without uncovering their greatest talents and potential". During the Workshop the discussions included: (1) Ways to discover your strengths and talents; (2) Why it is important to focus on your strengths and not on your weaknesses; (3) Do your strengths match your job and if 'no' what should you do; and other topics.

Camp to Kids Program at the Montenegro Orphanage:  a part of the Leadership Training Workshop:

This Camp came at the end of the month-long Camp to Kids program where the TWI USA team had traveled to each of the four Balkan countries for  in-country camps at local schools. There they were met by the "country team" and worked as a Leadership Team for the camp. This means that the USA team had worked with each "country team" during the month-long Balkan Camp to Kids trip. For the USA team, this ment that they had the opportunity to spend time with their team mates, get acquainted with the local language and visit some of the local sites. For the children in these camps, being able to listen to English - a language they are now studying in their school - gives them an opportunity to practice English and to learn to listen to the language spoken by a person whose first language is English.  With the month-long "four-country" camps completed, the teams traveled by car or bus to the Orphanage in Bijela, Montenegro to come together to work as a larger team where team work includes, not just 8 team leaders, but now 25 team members whose job was to organize and implement the "Camp To Kids" program for three days for approximately 100 children of all ages. The team of 25 members represented five countries and there were basically four native languages (English, Serbian, Bosnian, Albanian). English is the common language. During the camp program with the children (who speak Serbian), the team member who is leading the Group Activity speaks English and a team member from Serbia or Montenegro served as her/his interpreter. Having English as the camp language is a part of the TWI English Speaking Program that was requested by the Director of the Orphanage 7 years ago. Since that time, we have had a TWI team working with the Orphanage to teach the children "English Speaking Skills". This program is designed to complement the children's school English Program.
