“Not I,” called out all of the animals at once.

“Then I will cut the wheat myself,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

“Now,” said the Little Red Hen, “it is time to take the wheat to the miller so he can grind it into flour. Who will help me?”

“We will,” chirped the Baby Chicks

“Not I,” quacked the Duck

“Not I,” oinked the Pig

“Not I,” laughed the “Twin” Bugs

The miller ground the wheat into fine white flour and put it into a sack for the Little Red Hen. When she returned to the barnyard, the Little Red Hen asked, “Who will help me make this flour into dough?”

“We will,” chirped the Baby Chicks

“Not I,” called out everyone all at one time

“Then I will make the dough myself,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did. When the dough was ready to go into the oven, the Little Red Hen asked,  “Who will help me bake the bread?”

“We will,” chirped the Baby Chicks

“Not I,” hissed the Snake

“Not I,” said the Girl

“Not I,” said the Boy

“Then I will bake it myself,” said the Little Red Hen. And she did. Soon the bread was ready. As she took it from the oven, the Little Red Hen asked, “Well, who will help me eat this warm, fresh bread?”

“We will!” chirped the Baby Chicks

“I will!” quacked the Duck

“I will!” oinked the Pig

“I will!” laughed the “Twin” Bugs

“I will!” meowed the Cat

“I will!” wiggled the ears of Baby Bunny

“I will!” neighed the Horse

“I will!” yapped the Fox

“I will!” buzzed the Buzzy Bee

“I will!” barked the White Dog

“I will!” baaed the Lamb

“I will!” hissed the Snake

“I will!” said the Girl

“I will!” said the Boy

“No, you won’t,” said the Little Red Hen. “You would not help me plant the seeds, cut the wheat, go to the miller, make the dough, or bake the bread. Now my three chicks and I will eat this bread ourselves!”

And that is just what they did.
