"TWI FOR THE CHILDREN"
Summer Camps To Children in the Balkans
2011

During the summer of 2011, TWI  will host camps in  Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Montenegro. Click on our Camp Itinerary for details on the 2011 Camps.  Our TWI Blog  also gives information on the Camp activities

TWI hosted a picnic camp for children from the orphanage in Zenica, Bosnia and a camp for Roma Children in Sarajevo as well as a camp for children at the Sarajevo orphanage. Successful Camps were held for children in Ferizaj and at the Komogliave village in Kosovo and a 2-day camp was held at the Montenegro Orphanage. In late July, TWI will have a two-day camp at the orphanage in Mostar, Bosnia. Upon return to Sarajevo, TWI hosted a camp for severely disabled children near Sarajevo.  Click here to see the itinerary for our Camp program .

PROJECT SCOPE:

TWI for the Children took  camps to children  in Kosovo, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). The purpose of our camps was to bring love and fun to children in the Balkans. The Topic of the 2011 Camp for Kids was " Ferdinand the Bull and the Cowboy". The story was told using props and puppets. The lesson to be taught was Ferdinand's decision to fight or not to fight. This showed the children that they also must make Life choices that are difficult.

Summer opportunities furnished by the "Camp to Kids" program provided  children with a day of fun, learning, lunch and recreation to fulfill our goals of bringing love and fun to children in the Balkans. Our project provided a  positive image of America and demonstrates the desire of the American people to help the people of the Balkans.  Providing resources such as sports and educational equipment to these schools and orphanages materially assist these organizations, and shows the teachers and caregivers new methods to teach their students though crafts, song, dance, stories and games. In 2011, the craft was to color the TWI logo on a wonderful backpack to take home with them. The Backpack also has a picture of Ferdinand the Bull on the back side. Note the TWI backpacks provided to each camper.

The "Camps to Kids" project taught strong moral values of love, reconciliation, leadership, competition, geography and language that are  shared throughout their villages.

 OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of the "Camps to Kids" Project were to:

  •     Bring a day of fun to children in all areas of the Balkans.

  •      Teach the values of lovefriendship, self-worth and  educational concepts through crafts, games, stories, song and dance that teach language, sport competition, geography and art.

  •     Provide a platform to show the goodness of the America people and an opportunity to learn about American culture.

  •     Provide outreach to all ethnic groups by taking "Camps to Kids" to Muslim, Croat, Serb and Kosovar communities. Our outreach focuses on educational and  equipment to orphanages  and village schools as part of the "Camps to Kids"  project.

Goals:

                 (1) Teach values of playing and working in harmony  with others regardless  of   different  ethnic  and  religious backgrounds by partnering  American volunteers and  Balkan adults and teenagers  to make up the Camp Leadership Team to implement the camp program as a team effort.

              (2) Provide skills  that  will  help  the children as  they  move  into ‘adulthood" .

Volunteers have concerns for their safety when going to the Balkans. We prepared a letter addressing these concerns that will help when making your decision to volunteer (a letter to  team volunteers)

These camps have become more expensive each year. With the exchange rate with the Euro, our dollars buy less. This year our summer  TWI Program will cost more than $20,000.
