Lectures provided background on theory
and practice; role play presented practical strategies; question and
discussion involved all participants. The seminars did not involve
breaking into small groups since space did not accommodate such work
sessions – participants in the past have liked work groups but the
groups wanted to be fed the information so they could come away with new
strategies. Participants wanted practical strategies to use when they get
back to work. Topics for the seminars included: Classroom Management,
Bullying, Drug Prevention and Hope. Each presentation was customized among
the four topics as we saw the need – participants primarily wanted to
address behavioral issues in the classroom. One group had more secondary
(gymnasium) staff and had had 4 students who were killed because they were
drinking and driving. They needed to hear the drug prevention information.
The participants were very involved. They felt comfortable disagreeing and
speaking their minds. Participants
demanded practical strategies.
