Learning
Center:
PURPOSE
The Learning Center for Children with
Special Needs in Sarajevo is designed to teach children and
their parents how to overcome disabilities and become active, useful members
of their communities.
In the summer of 2002, TWI was approached by several
mothers of special needs children in Sarajevo with a need to begin a
"Learning Center " for their children with special needs.
In November 2002, these hard working ladies opened the Learning Center at a local school in Sarajevo.
Leadership
LEARNING
Since November 2002, the "Learning
Center"
(1) successfully obtained a location, registered as a non-profit organization;
(2) obtained equipment for the learning center; and,
(3) provides much needed instruction for the children with special
needs.
Making new friends
The " Learning Center"
provides a much needed opportunity for children with special needs
to meet new friends and socialize with their peers.
MEETING OTHERS
TRANSPORTATION AND ASSISTANCE
Transportation to the Center
The Center provides transportation
required for the children and their families to
and from the "Learning Center". The Learning Center
often uses the TWI van for travel
to events and activities.
TWI for the Children annually evaluates the "Learning Center" and has determined that :

the needs of the special needs children and their families were being met. (In 2005, the Center rented two additional rooms and hired additional staff.)

the Center has attempted to become self-sufficient, and in 2009 has made progress toward being able to operate without significant financial assistance.

The manner in which the leaders moved forward on their own to find a location, become registered with the government, and organize a curriculum for the learning center showed that they wish to make the Center a success.

In 2009, the Learning Center was hosting students on a daily basis with educational programs, but at budgetary over-runs.

The Learning Center will continue to receive funding from "TWI for the Children" as funds become available. These TWI funds will not be sufficient to allow the Center to operate without other funding. will be funded to the maximum extent possible.
TWI
provides financial assistance and advice.
Evaluation
Success
Our Bosnian partners wrote that: -- " the children have enjoyed themselves so much at the Learning Center that they hate to leave at the end of the day".
