Training Workshops

March 2003 Training Workshops:

In March 2003, TWI hosted a series of  workshops to train trainers on how to recognize and treat  learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit disorder (ADHD) in children. Our goal was for these educators to take back this instruction to their schools or institutions and train others -- thus having a wider impact. By identifying and helping kids with LD and ADHD early, we can motivate a lot of kids to stay in school and to learn and feel good about themselves. This instruction provided  good teaching methods that applies to ALL children and introduced some new ideas to Bosnian schools which now focus on lectures and rote learning. We provided workshops to more than 500 persons in the Bosnian towns of Sarajevo, Mostar, Zenica and Banja Luka.

June 2003 Training Workshops:

Due to lack of funds, TWI for the Children cancelled this workshop and concentrated on another workshop series  held in November 2003.

CAMPS to KIDS

During the Summer of 2003, TWI for the Children hosted "Camps2Kids at 18 schools and four orphanages throughout Bosnia and in Montenegro.

During each camp day, our TWI  teams provided a fun-filled day of games, stories, crafts, and dance. Lunch was provided to each child along with caps, name tags,  toys and gifts.  Sports equipment was left with each of the schools visited.

International Studies

In 2003, TWI for the Children began a very successful series of projects to send students and instructors to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Montenegro to work with universities and to work in orphanages throughout these countries.

University Instructors:

In 2003, TWI sent instructors to universities in Bosnia and Herzegovina to teach English and other subjects.

TWI for the Children provided Professors to the University Dzemal Bijedic in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina on short term assignments. Our instructors taught subjects of need to the Dzemal Bijedic University.

Our initial short-term teaching project was held during the period 1 - 15 March 2003.  Dr. Roland Reed, from Catholic University in Washington DC, provided instruction in Drama and English.

  • Dr Reed returned to Mostar , 9 - 16 May 2003 to teach at the Dzemal Bijedic University.  At the conclusion of his teaching period, Dr. Reed took his students to visit with the orphans at the Mostar Orphanage.

Dr. Reed  introduced students to the history of theater, improvisation and acting and helped the student begin writing their own scripts and performing staged readings of other student's scripts as a dynamic method of practicing writing and speaking English.

 Educational Support:

During the summer of 2003, TWI sent students from universities in the United States to  work for extended periods at orphanages in Bosnia and in Montenegro.

TWI for the Children supported two groups of volunteers working in orphanages in the Balkans.  These volunteers worked in the orphanages teaching English and assisting the caretakers with the children's studies. The period of work at each orphanage is at least two weeks but most volunteers stay for a month at the orphanage.

From 22 May until 22 June two volunteers, Emily from the University of Michigan and Melisa from Sarajevo University worked with the children to teach English and assist the children with their school work.  Their assistance was extremely well received and they were requested to return next summer.

Expanded Educational Studies:

Two volunteers from Kansas State University, Kami and Sharit,  participated on an extended basis, working at several orphanages throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The ladies arrived in Bosnia on 18 June and went with the TWI Transportation Coordinator (Vahid Minich) to bring the Montenegro team back to Sarajevo. On 23 and 24 June the ladies visited the Sarajevo Orphanage to see what an orphanage was like.  On 25 June they traveled to Banja Luka where they began their work at the orphanage in this town.  Their stay in Banja Luka was from 25 June until 18 July when they returned to Sarajevo.  They next went to the Mostar Orphanage and worked there from 19 July until 7 August.  They were picked up by TWI after an overnight in Sarajevo and worked for a short period at the orphanage in Zenica.  They departed Bosnia on 14 August.

TWI  evaluated both having volunteers working at a single orphanage versus working at several orphanages and  decided that working at a single orphanage for a month would be most beneficial to both the children and the volunteer.
